What the interviewer is really checking

This question tests whether you understand the role and whether your motivation is connected to the work. Hiring teams want evidence that you chose this opportunity for a reason that will still matter after the first week. They are also listening for a realistic understanding of the company, the customers, and the problems the role will help solve. A concise answer can demonstrate preparation, judgment, and genuine interest at the same time.

Use a four-part answer structure

Build the answer in this order: name the work that attracts you, connect it to something specific about the company, add one proof point from your experience, and finish with the value you hope to create. Keep each part to one or two sentences. This gives you a natural beginning, evidence in the middle, and a forward-looking close without repeating your resume.

• Role fit: name the responsibility or problem you want to work on.
• Company detail: mention a product, customer, mission, or working style you researched.
• Relevant proof: connect one past project or skill to that responsibility.
• Contribution: explain how you can help the team and what you want to learn next.

Research before you write

Avoid copying the company About page. Instead, read the job description and choose two details you can discuss naturally. Look for the customer problem, the team’s current priority, the tools or skills named in the role, and a recent product or company decision. Then remove anything you could say to every employer. Specific details make the answer credible; exaggerated claims make it sound memorized.

• Write down the role’s most important outcome, not just its list of tasks.
• Choose one company detail that is directly connected to that outcome.
• Prepare a short result from your own experience that proves the connection.

A fill-in template you can practice aloud

Try this structure, then replace every bracket with your own details: “I want to work here because [role responsibility] matches the kind of problem I enjoy solving. I was interested in [specific company or customer detail], especially because [reason]. In my previous experience, I [action] and [result]. I would be excited to bring that approach to [team or role] while continuing to grow in [relevant skill].” Read it aloud and shorten any phrase you would not normally say.

Mistakes that weaken the answer

Do not make salary, location, or a vague reputation the main reason. Do not claim to love a product you have not used or promise that the company is your dream employer. Avoid a long personal history and avoid repeating the job description word for word. A good answer is usually 45 to 60 seconds, includes one concrete detail, and ends by connecting your motivation to the team’s work.
